Why We Love It
As a brand, Tudor needs no introduction. Although for years the brand had labored under Rolex’s shadow, since its relaunch at the beginning of this decade, it has attained an identity all its own. Part of the appeal lies in watches like this one, the Black Bay Dark, which bridges the gap between vintage and contemporary in a way that’s hard to argue with—even for purists like us.
This unworn, new-in-box example is an incredible opportunity to get your hands on a pristine example of the stealthiest Black Bay out there.
The Story
The Black Bay was, along with the Pelagos, the brand’s take on classic Rolex and Tudor dive watches. We say watches in the plural for a reason. Rather than being a line-by-line rehash or reissue of a particular vintage piece, the Black Bay was an amalgam of several different vintage models.
In creating the Black Bay, Tudor started at the very beginning of Tudor and Rolex dive watch history (a very good place to start, rich in tradition and lore). The Black Bay incorporated the “big crown” of the first reference of Tudor Sub, the Reference 7922, which had an 8mm crown like its Rolex counterpart. For the hands, the Black Bay lifted the same handset as the most famous of vintage Tudor Subs, the Reference 7021 “Snowflake.”
The Black Bay Dark is a further extension of Tudor's riff on its classic models. Instead of finished steel, the Oyster case is coated in PVD with matching black dial and PVD-treated steel bracelet.
In the world of the Black Bay, this is the stealthiest of them all!
